It's delicate, like a flower. The rhetorical value of kairos — kairos occurs in a specific place and at a specific time that is contingent on the conditions necessary for kairos to “work” for a specific audience. The term comes from the Greek for “right time,” “opportunity,” or “season.” Modern Greek also defines kairos as “weather.” A kairos appeal depends a great deal on knowing which way the wind blows. The concept of kairos appears often in classical rhetoric; ancient Greek Sophists described kairos in rhetoric as speech timed for opportune moments, under the premise that great orators knew when to seize on the right moment to introduce certain ideas. Kairos in Rhetoric Kairos (Greek: καιρός - usually translated as “the opportune or appropriate time”) is a moment when conditions are fit for the accomplishment of a crucial action. The origin of the word, though non-rhetorical, illustrates its modern use well. Kairos (pronounced “KAI-ros”) in Ancient Greek meant “time” – but it wasn’t just any time. It was exactly the right time to say or do a particular thing. In modern rhetoric, it refers to making exactly the right statement at exactly the right moment.
