HIV-related stigma and discrimination are major barriers for overall health-related quality of life despite impressive clinical and virological improvements in HIV care. There is a scarcity of well designed intervention studies that document stigma reduction in people living with HIV and few studies that specifically assess the effect of stigma on health-related quality of life. Stigma can result in people living with HIV being insulted, rejected, gossiped about and excluded from social activities. At its extreme, stigma can drive people to physical violence. People living with HIV often feel nervous about telling others that they have HIV due to the fear of stigma or discrimination. Stigma remains deeply bound up in other discriminations, with racism, xenophobia, transphobia, sexism and homophobia all playing key roles in continued stigma and misconceptions about people who live with HIV. HIV stigma is negative attitudes and beliefs about people with HIV. When we support people with HIV, we make it easier for them to lead healthy lives. Let’s Stop HIV Together highlights the role that each person plays in stopping HIV stigma and gives voice to people living with HIV, as well as their friends and family.
